Kaiapoi High School

Kaiapoi High School is a modern co-educational high school located to the north of Christchurch. The School has a well qualified and experienced staff and a reputation for providing for the learning needs of each student. The roll is 720, with 20 international students (studying from Year 9 to Year 13) from a number of different countries.

Aims and Focus

Kaiapoi High School aims to make a positive difference to a student’s educational experience. Our main focus is student achievement and to assist in this we:

Academic Programme

A wide range of courses is offered from Year 9 to Year 13. Courses of study prepare students for national qualifications, including entrance for New Zealand universities and English language tests. Senior class sizes are usually small and students are encouraged to achieve to their full potential. The school welcomes students at all year levels.

Extra-curricular Programmes

Students may take part in a number of sports, from athletics to golf and skiing. Music and cultural activities include bands, choirs and instrumental groups. The school is nationally recognised for excellence in Outdoor Recreation and Leadership, Physical Education and Hospitality programmes. Camps, practical studies and outdoor adventure activities make use of a mountain lodge in the Southern Alps.

Location and Facilities

Kaiapoi is a town of 12,000 residents, only 20 minutes by car from Christchurch and from Christchurch International airport. The town provides a safe and clean environment and easy access to Christchurch city amenities. The school has well equipped classrooms, workshops, computer facilities, library, modern auditorium and music suite, full sized gymnasium, grass sports fields and hard tennis courts, all set in 8.2 hectares of park-like grounds. A school canteen provides a selection of snack foods.

Homestay Accommodation

The School arranges Homestays. The Homestay Coordinator supervises homestay arrangements and gives assistance as needed. Most students can walk to school from their homestay.

Some students can travel by school bus. Homestay fees are $175 per week (NZ$8050 per 46 week school year). Fees include an administration charge. There is no placement fee.

English Language Entry Requirements

English language ability at elementary level for Year 9 and 10, intermediate at Year 11 and 12, advanced at Year 13 or IELTS 5.5 or equivalent.

English Language Support

Up to 4 hours per week of ESOL or ESOL support where required. A fully trained and very experienced teacher plans a full ESOL programme. Opportunity is provided for motivated and able students to sit IELTS, TOEFL and TOEIC examinations.

Overseas Schools and Students

The School warmly welcomes overseas students and values the contact with other cultures. Our school has relationships with some overseas schools and is interested in extending such connections.

Tuition Fees

The annual tuition fee for year 2009 is NZ$11,500 and is payable in full on enrolment. The cost includes subject class tuition. See Schedule of Fees leaflet for additional costs.
