Roncalli College

Situated in the coastal South Canterbury town of Timaru, Roncalli College is within easy reach of some of the South Island’s most breathtaking scenery of crystal blue lakes and snow capped mountains.

Timaru is just two hours south of Christchurch and is part of a region full of contrasting landscapes, making it an attractive education centre. The natural environment of South Canterbury offers a range of outdoor pursuits such as camping, tramping, rock climbing, skiing, snowboarding and kayaking.

Roncalli College is:

  • Co-educational, with about 550 students ranging from years 9 to 13
  • A Catholic integrated school committed to gospel values
  • Accredited to offer New Zealand curriculum framework courses
  • Giving its students the chance to study towards New Zealand qualifications as well as international qualifications.

Roncalli College places high emphasis on honesty, commitment, perseverance and concern for others.

It offers modern facilities including a new and well-resourced art/technology block, a gymnasium and two computer suites. Students at the college also have access to squash courts and a covered swimming pool.

Roncalli College has a strong tradition in sports such as netball, rugby, cricket, table tennis, hockey, skiing and yachting. The Young New Zealander's Challenge also operates in the college, providing students with many opportunities for personal growth and development.

Outdoor Programme

Year 12 Course Outline

This course is of between 100 and 200 hours depending upon options taken up by students.

The program includes elements of leadership styles; communication and group management skills; environmental issues and concerns; hypothermia; first aid; dealing with an emergency as well as a range of practical issues such as river crossing, safe tramping, outdoor cooking and map reading.

There is also the possibility of two 5-day residential courses, one of which is in a student - leader capacity.

This course has a 'hands-on' focus and is an excellent introduction to aspects of leadership in the outdoors.

Course Costs: approx $700 (in addition to Tuition fees).

Year 13 Course Outline

  • 50% Practical 50% Theory
  • Aquatics Module - completion of Life Saving Award and CPR Certificate
  • Lifestyles Module - Develop and carry out personalised fitness programme
  • Study theory associated with this.
  • Sports Education - Squash and Golf theory and practical in depth.
  • Leadership - Sportfit Leadership Award
  • Mountaincraft
  • building and using snow shelters
  • introduction to mountaineering skills
  • use of ropes, knots, anchors and belays for mountaineering
  • avalanche awareness skills
  • Assessment:
  • Examinations (2)
  • Assignments associated with each module.
  • Practical Assessment

Academic Programme

Papanui High School offers a full range of academic subjects to suit the needs of students. Apart from the usual academic courses; Catering and Hospitality, Drama, Design and Art courses are popular with our international students. New international students take part in an orientation programme, before being placed in a suitable mainstream class according to their English language skills.

Fees & Accomodation

All international students are accommodated in homestays with local families. Students have their own room and live as part of the family.

Tuition fee:

  • Annual tuition fee NZ$12 500
  • Homestay costs NZ$225 per week
  • Medical insurance NZ$700 approx.
