Aranui High School

Located in the ‘Garden City’ of Christchurch, Aranui High School reaps the benefits of a close proximity to the beautiful Southern Alps and the beach while being part of the South Island’s largest city.

The school is co-educational and is only 15 minutes by bus from the city and 10 minutes from the beach. It is set among spacious grounds with excellent facilities, including a swimming pool, tennis courts, sports field, computer suites, music suite, media room, science laboratories, canteen, two gymnasiums including a weight training room and a photographic dark room.

The school was opened in 1960 and now caters for about 1150 students, including international students from 10 different countries.

Aranui is the Maori word for ‘broad path’ and is symbolic of the school’s goal to offer a well-rounded education that caters to students’ social and cultural, as well as academic needs. The school is renowned nationally for its innovative academy programmes that cater to the individual needs of the student.

Outdoors Programme

Aranui High School’s outdoor adventure programme is continually being developed and improved. Students spend either eight or 12 hours per week on the programme and the remainder of their time is spent in regular academic classes.

Students can work toward a variety of qualifications, including New Zealand Qualifications Authority unit standards, Aranui High School Outdoor Education Certificate and mountain safety courses.

Through the course, students learn the necessary skills required for a successful career in the outdoors. They also gain important personal development skills that can be transferred to any workplace or career path. Skills such as effective leadership, self-confidence, co-operative learning, teamwork, problem solving, decision making and group analysis, along with the knowledge of fitness and nutrition gained from the course set students in good stead for any challenge they may face in future.

During the course, students will have the opportunity to participate in activities such as:

  • Kayaking
  • Bushcraft
  • Hiking
  • Rock climbing
  • Mountain biking
  • Snow craft
  • Orienteering
  • Boat and water safety
